Job Description:
Position exists in Biomechanical Engineering at Porterville
Developmental Center. Under the direction and supervision of the
Assistive Technology Supervisor/designee, the candidate will work
progressively from the basic concepts of preventative maintenance
of wheelchairs and related equipment to repair and modification of
mobility equipment. After gaining a full understanding of the
mechanical aspects of mobility equipment and showing proficiency in
carrying out all repairs (usually takes a full year), the incumbent
will begin learning the various technologies associated with custom
anatomical seating and positioning.
This position is not eligible for telework, this position is in
person only.

Working Conditions
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must possess and maintain sufficient
strength, agility, endurance and sensory ability to perform the
duties contained in the duty statement. Must be capable and willing
to work overtime, be capable of lifting 50 lbs. alone, or 100 lbs.
with the assistance of one other employee, be able to carry out
CMIT procedures, and finally to work in any area within the
facility if called upon to do so.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Ongoing interaction with clients.
Potential exposure to communicable diseases, blood-borne pathogens,
body fluids, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to
a clinical nursing environment. May be exposed to inclement
weather, toxic substances, radiation, and high noise levels.
Requires exposure to individuals who exhibit aggressive and
destructive behavior requiring physical intervention. There may be
temporary reassignment, which entails working with individuals with
varying treatment needs. Training and protective devices are
provided and if proper precautions are exercised, exposure is
minimal.

Department Information The California Department of Developmental
Services (DDS) is the agency through which the State of California
provides services and supports to individuals with developmental
disabilities.
These disabilities include intellectual disability, cerebral palsy,
epilepsy, autism and related conditions. Services are provided
through state-operated developmental centers and community
facilities, and contracts with 21 nonprofit regional centers. The
regional centers serve as a local resource to help find and access
the services and supports available to individuals with
developmental disabilities and their families.
